![]() ![]() Lastly, comparisons can even be made between the two major figures of both religions, Jesus Christ and the Buddha. On a more philosophical plain, shared ideas can be seen between the Zen tradition of Buddhism and Friedrich Schleiermacher’s exceptionally influential thoughts on religion. One way to make comparisons between Buddhism and Christianity is by looking at a popular form of each religion, specifically T’ien-t’ai Buddhism and Protestant Christianity, which share a number of comparable teachings and practices. The current paper will focus on the similarities that can be found between Christianity and Buddhism, two tremendously popular religions which seem vastly different in their traditions and teachings. True, Hinduism is not the same as Islam and Shinto is a far cry from Judaism, but even in the face of these apparent disparities parallels can be drawn between almost any two religions, even if only a very few. The danger with this division, aside from working almost exclusively with Northern hemisphere cultures, is that it suggests that the religions within each group are somehow fundamentally different from one another. All the world’s major religions can be split into two very general, albeit limiting, categories that encompass most of them: Western-popular religions and Eastern-popular religions. ![]()
